The best and the worst.

1 Feb

Fitness wise, I have had the best week – swim training twice, regular gym twice. The worst week in a very long time, nutritionally – apart from the regular drinking debauchery, I am gone utter berzerk on desserts both indian and western. Literally, thousands of calories in desserts. And last night, I decided I was so famished, I needed a bowl of instant noodles. No more rubbish, I can never outtrain a bad diet so this week, it is just one single glass of alcohol. That’s all I am allowing myself. No wine with dinner, no after work beer. The insanity has to stop. I have been trying to get back on the backwagon for the last two months. It HAS to happen today. Now.

Making better food choices.

20 Nov

Hunger does quite a number on logic. When I am hungry, I reach for all things bad – sugary sweet soft drinks, the piece of christmas candy, that delectable loaf of olive bread that haunts me when I open the fridge door. Nothing great on the nutrition scheme of things. One of the major changes i have noticed aside, the obvious drop in size is my ability to make better food choices in the face of adversity. Quite dramatic, I assure you. Today, I had an insane hungry pang for anything sweet – red velvet cupcake. Now, the "old" me (as in previous, not crotchety) would have traipsed down to the nearest Marmalade Pantry which to my obvious dismay is just a tempting stone’s throw away. Instead, my new steely resolved not to waste the calories since my vacation is now firmly officially over and instead made it down to The Sandwich Shop for a mixed bean salad. Complex carbs, satisfying and filled with natural sugar which kicks fructose in it’s jiggly behind.

When the boards were up during renovation, I thought "Oh no, another salad place!" When they opened, I decided to pop in for a visit and, it turns out that they make pretty good salads. The concept is innovative.

For $8.90, you get a bowl of mixed greens, a dressing of choice and 6 toppings of your fancy – tuna, sunflower seeds, tofu, corn, broccolli, olives, cheese, chick peas etc. You’d be hardpressed to find something you didn’t like! It has become my new favourite take out for lunch. I would usually get two servings of tuna, egg, tofu, sunflower seed and chick peas with a french ravegoti dressing (olive oil, lemon juice etc). Absolutely yums and I get my protein.

It helps that the owners are on hand to serve you, gives service a real kick! If you are in the CBD area, drop by and give them a look.

Protein-wise, it’s an awesome day. Caloric-wise, it is the devil’s armpit. It is commonly said that not all calories are made equal so we’ll see. I should not have had that yogurt. Blasted 11am hunger pangs! (more…)

It is abundantly clear that I get more tangible results from monitoring what I eat and noting it down. Between July- August, I have lost ZERO weight and while I have not gained weight, I am now behind schedule which is horrible. I have come too far to let this deter me. Way too far.
